What is a Domain and Why do we need It?

In the modern world, it is difficult to imagine life without the Internet. We use the Internet every day and cannot deny its importance in the modern world. You may have heard that the Internet is called a “network of networks” because behind this, perhaps in a simple word, there is a huge number of interconnected networks connecting hundreds of millions of computers around the world. Each computer has a unique identifier to communicate with others. Thus, computers connect to the Internet using an IP number that identifies their location. IP gives us the ability to access information on the Internet. The domain provides users with a simple name instead of long numbers or even codes. Thus, the Domain Name System (DNS) is made up of thousands of computers called servers that host websites. The obvious advantage of domain names is the easy-to-remember names of websites, mailboxes, and other information on the Internet. And a less noticeable advantage for the average user is that in this way we can separate the name of something from its location.

Let’s take a look at the URL structure for a better understanding of the domain name. Imagine you are looking for IT blogs and stumbled upon a website in the internet space that looks like this:

In the above link, we see three parts of the URL:

1.https: // – file transfer protocol;

2.hostimul.com – domain;

3.blog – direction or other parameters of the page.

Now that we have a better understanding of what a domain name looks like, let’s talk about a second-level domain (SLD) and a top level domain (TLD). The SLD comes before the period and usually represents your company name, blog or group name, etc. This is part of the “identity” quality of your domain. In our case, the second-level domain is “Digitalmarketinglahore”.

The top-level domain immediately follows the dot. This is either a country code top-level domain, such as .jp or .uk, or a generic top-level domain (gTLD), such as .com, .org, .net, .edu, or .gov. There is no significant difference between generic and ccTLDs, but if you are a local entrepreneur, you are likely to see more search engine traffic if you have a ccTLD. If you are an international business, a country code top-level domain will not put you in a losing position, but it would be wise to register a generic top-level domain (gTLD) to increase your brand awareness abroad.

You will need a domain if you have a website. The site must have an address, and this address must have a name. The reason domain names are so talked about is that there are so many choices. So every crazy idea will find a place to exist.
