How to Plan Your Renovation Phase by Phase

Renovating the home takes careful planning and organization of costs. Depending on the result you want to achieve, you need to plan it step by step and go through each phase thoroughly, especially if you are doing it on your own. Then comes the design, which is the cherry on the top, and of course, the phase where everything comes together. If you don’t have any ideas or you are not in the clear what you want to do with it, here are some helpful suggestions. But first, let’s go over all the phases shortly, just to make sure you plan the budget appropriately.

Phase 1: Planning

This phase is the most important one. As the saying goes, the end is only as good as the beginning. That’s because you plan the budget for every remodeling job that you are going to do and try to stay within limits. In this phase, you list everything that is necessary to be done and everything that you wish as an extra. Then, you do the research how much would all of this cost and decide that you need to delete from the list.

Phase 2: Clearing Out

Once you know what you are going for, you start clearing the old stuff. This includes some demolition and some debris disposal, and to do all of it the right way, plan to rent a large roll-off dumpster so you can take care of the waste.

Phase 3: Take Care of HVAC, Electrical, and Plumbing

This part is better to be handled by professionals if you lack understanding in these fields. The work done behind walls and beneath floors includes dealing with the HVAC, adjusting the central heating, air conditioning, and installing new electrical and plumbing systems. Inspections before any work are a must.

Phase 4: Installing Drywall

After finishing the electrical, plumbing, and HVAC work, next comes the drywall process, which creates a seamless surface of all the floors and ceilings.

Phase 5: Painting

In this phase, you can experiment with colors. Choose the colors that speak the most to your mood and paint the walls yourself, or hire a pro if you don’t want to leave a mess behind.

Phase 6: Installing of Cabinets and Fixtures

Now, you can begin with the designing process. Install the cabinetry, lighting, toilets, bathtubs, sinks according to the design plan, and then move to the doors and windows.

Remember to leave the flooring for last as it doesn’t get any scrapes or damages.

Phase 7: Interior Design

Ok. Now we are talking. The interior design should make you relaxed, cozy, and at the same time, express your mood and views to people who are coming over. It should be your comfortable haven where you are about to spend your happy and sad moments safely. For that purpose, the first thing you need to do is decide on the style. Which interior design style is the most appealing to you? Is it modern, contemporary, Scandinavian, urban, shabby-chic, traditional, or any other?

If you are not sure which style will suit your house most as well as your preferences and commodity, try virtual house staging to see how it will all come out. The virtually staged photos of your house will give you some insights on how the complete look will do, and if you are happy with what you see, you can further pursue the ideas.

The most crucial thing about choosing the furnishings is that the pieces are big enough to satisfy your comfort needs but small enough to open up space and not clutter the rooms.

Then, when buying furniture, make sure that you find out all the pieces and know how much they cost so that you don’t miscalculate the prices and end up without money and furniture.

Finally, add some personal touch, for example, frame some intimate moments of your family that you are very proud of, or put on display an ornament that you bought on a memorable trip.
