4 Ingredients Healthy Toothpastes Don’t Include

Brushing with a healthy toothpaste helps remove plaque and other harmful bacteria, specifically those that cause dental issues like cavities and gum disease. But not all toothpaste is created equal; in fact, some of the most common toothpaste include toxic ingredients that do more harm than good. Below we list some of the things that should never be included in a healthy toothpaste:

1. SLS/SLES

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium Laureth sulfate (SLES) are commonly used in toothpaste despite being quite harmful to humans. These surfactants are also used in detergents, shampoos, and industrial cleaners. SLS and SLES do little more than creating foam, but this foam helps remove food particles from the teeth. Excessive use of either surfactant could cause a wide range of negative side effects in humans, and several studies show that SLS can strip away the lining in the mouth, leading to canker sores, dry mouth, and allergies. And when SLS and SLES are absorbed into the bloodstream improperly, they can adversely affect the heart and liver.

2. Triclosan

There’s been a lot of debate about using triclosan in toothpaste, mainly because a lot of reports show that triclosan may adversely affect human health. Triclosan may be a carcinogen, one that hampers the immune and endocrine systems. Some worry that triclosan can also cause antibiotic resistance, and others say it could decrease thyroid hormones and cause tumors. Triclosan is now categorized as a pesticide, one that can harm humans as well as the environment.

3. Carrageenan

Carrageenan is extracted from red seaweed and commonly referred to as Irish moss. It has been used for centuries as a thickener in the food industry, and today it’s a popular vegan replacement for gelatin and animal products. But several reports have found that carrageenan may be responsible for a wide range of problems, like IBS, rheumatoid arthritis, and even colon cancer. Carrageenan may react negatively with stomach acid as well. Excessive exposure to carrageenan may cause food allergies and glucose intolerance.

4. Parabens

Parabens are often included in cosmetics and toothpaste, and they’re used for their anti-fungal and antimicrobial properties. Parabens hinder the growth of bacteria and other microbes, thereby improving the shelf life of products they’re included in. Multiple studies have found that parabens may bind to estrogen receptors, causing reproductive issues in women and increasing the risk of breast cancer.

The best whitening toothpaste does not include any of the above ingredients. Instead, it replaces them with natural and organic alternatives. If you’re looking for a premium toothpaste that’s free of toxic ingredients, visit smiletwice.
